Trauma Counselling

Trauma can sometimes feel like you are reliving the experience over and over again. This happens when the nervous system remains stuck in survival mode, reacting to reminders of the trauma as though the danger is still present — even when you are physically safe. Living in a constant state of fight, flight, or freeze can feel exhausting, overwhelming, and difficult to manage.

Over time, untreated trauma can also contribute to other challenges such as anxiety, depression, emotional dysregulation, or substance use as a way to cope with distressing symptoms.

Trauma therapy focuses on helping your nervous system feel safe again so the past no longer feels as present or overwhelming. It is also normal to feel cautious, guarded, or distrustful after trauma. Creating a sense of safety in therapy is the first priority, and we move at a pace that feels manageable for you.

Trauma can come from many experiences. While some events are more obvious — such as accidents, abuse, violence, or loss — trauma can also come from ongoing experiences like emotional neglect, invalidation, betrayal, or chronic stress. What is traumatic for one person may not look the same for another, but all experiences are valid when they overwhelm your ability to cope.

These experiences, especially when they occur in childhood, can impact self-esteem, emotional regulation, relationships, and mental health later in life.

Once safety and stability are established, trauma therapy may include approaches such as grounding and breathwork, nervous system regulation, cognitive processing, and trauma reprocessing techniques like bilateral stimulation or gradual exposure work when appropriate.
